Best Red Dot Magnifiers for AR-15s

A magnifier turns a fast 1x dot into a sight you can actually identify a target with at distance. The catch is that it has to fit your dot, your mount and your eye.

Short answer

For most AR-15 owners, a 3x flip-to-side magnifier is the right starting point. EOTech's G43 is the reference pick behind an EOTech or similar dot, Holosun's HM3X and Sig Sauer's Juliet3-Micro are strong 3x alternatives, and the EOTech G45 or Sig Juliet5-Micro make sense only if you want 5x and accept a smaller field of view and tighter eye position.

Why bother with a magnifier at all

A red dot is the fastest way to put a rifle on a target close up. It is not much help at telling whether the shape at 150 yards is a steel plate, a stump or a person. A magnifier fixes that. It sits behind the dot, enlarges the view through it, and swings aside when you want 1x again.

The idea is old, the hardware has matured, and there is now a magnifier for nearly every budget and dot. This list sticks to options carried by our retail partners, and it sorts them by what they are good for, not by a ranking we cannot back up. We have not tested these. Specs for EOTech models come from EOTech's catalog and manual. For other brands, check the maker's spec sheet before buying.

If you are still choosing between a magnifier setup and a low-power variable optic, start with the site's LPVO vs red dot plus magnifier guide.

What to look at before you buy

Magnification. 3x is the common choice. 5x shows more detail but narrows your view, and small movements of your head matter more.

Field of view. EOTech's numbers make the trade-off concrete: its 3x G43 is listed at 7.5 degrees and its 5x G45 at 4.4 degrees. That is a big difference in how much of the world you can see when you flip the magnifier in.

Eye relief. Magnifiers have much tighter eye relief than red dots. EOTech lists 2.5 inches for the G43 and 2.6 inches for the G45. You need the magnifier close enough to your eye and in line with it.

Mount height. The optical center of the magnifier must line up with the optical center of your dot. If your dot is at lower 1/3 cowitness height, your magnifier mount needs to match. The site's cowitness height guide covers the standards.

Diopter adjustment. Some magnifiers let you focus the eyepiece for your eyesight. That can make a real difference to how sharp the dot looks.

Flip direction. Most flip to the side. Check whether the mount can be set to flip left or right, depending on your handedness and what else is on the rail.

The picks

EOTech G43: the reference 3x

The G43 is EOTech's compact 3x, and it is the obvious pairing behind an EOTech holographic sight. EOTech lists it at 3x with 2.5 inches of eye relief, a 7.5-degree field of view, and tool-free horizontal and vertical adjustments, on a switch-to-side quick-detach mount. EOTech also notes that its 1 MOA dot stays 1 MOA at any magnification, which means the dot does not swell to cover your target when you magnify it.

One important setup detail from EOTech's manual: holographic sights with side buttons or quick-detach levers need the included 7mm riser on the magnifier mount, while sights with rear buttons do not. Getting that wrong leaves the magnifier and sight out of line.

The site has a full G43 review and a G43 setup guide.

EOTech G33: the older 3x with a diopter

EOTech's G33 is a longer 3x model with a listed 2.2 inches of eye relief and an adjustable diopter, which EOTech lists as a G33 feature. If your eyes benefit from focusing the eyepiece, that matters. EOTech's catalog lists the G33 at 10.6 oz and the G43 at 11.3 oz, so the newer, shorter G43 is not the lighter of the two. Ammunition Depot lists the G33 with a switch-to-side mount.

EOTech G45: when 5x is the point

The G45 is EOTech's 5x. EOTech lists it at 12.8 oz with 2.6 inches of eye relief and a 4.4-degree field of view. That narrow view is the cost of the extra magnification. It makes sense if you need to identify or engage small targets at longer ranges with a dot-based rifle. For most home and general-purpose rifles, 3x is easier to live with. Ammunition Depot lists the G45 5x, and also sells it bundled with an EXPS3-4 sight as the HHS V.

Holosun HM3X: a value-oriented 3x with a QD mount

Holosun's HM3X is a 3x magnifier on a flip-to-side quick-detach mount. Holosun designs it to pair with its own dots, and it also works behind other 1x sights at matching height. It is a good fit if you run a Holosun dot and want the whole setup from one brand. Check Holosun's spec sheet for eye relief, field of view and mount height before ordering.

Ammunition Depot also lists an HS510C and HM3X combo if you are starting from scratch.

Sig Sauer Juliet3-Micro and Juliet5-Micro

Sig's Juliet-Micro magnifiers come in 3x and 5x. They use a push-button flip-to-side mount for 1913 Picatinny rails. Sig also sells them bundled with its Romeo dots, such as the Romeo-MSR Gen II with a Juliet5-Micro and the Romeo8T with a Juliet3T. Bundles can be the simplest way to make sure the heights match. See Sig's spec sheet for the field of view, eye relief and diopter range of each model.

Trijicon MRO HD 3x

Trijicon's 3x magnifier for the MRO family comes on a flip-to-side quick-release mount and includes parts for both 1/3 and full cowitness heights. If you already run an MRO, it is the matched choice. Ammunition Depot lists the Trijicon 3x magnifier with adjustable-height mount.

Sightmark T-3 and T-5

Sightmark's T-3 (3x) and T-5 (5x) come with a locking quick-detach flip-to-side mount. They are aimed at shooters who want a magnifier without spending as much as the premium brands. That can be a sensible choice for a range rifle. For a rifle you depend on, weigh the maker's warranty and support. Both appear in Ammunition Depot's magnifier category.

Setup tips that save frustration

  1. Mount the dot first, zero it, then add the magnifier. EOTech's manual says to re-check zero after installing the magnifier, as the magnified view can reveal small errors.
  2. Center the dot in the magnifier with the magnifier's own dials. These only center the reticle in the view. They do not change where the rifle shoots.
  3. Set the magnifier where your eye falls naturally. Slide it along the rail until you get a full, clear view at your normal cheek weld.
  4. Torque to the maker's spec. EOTech lists 24 in-lbs for its G-series mount screws if you use a torque wrench. Other makers have their own values. Do not borrow numbers from one mount for another.
Before mounting anything, unload the rifle, remove the magazine, lock the bolt open and confirm the chamber is empty. Store the rifle secured from children and unauthorized users when you are done.

Bottom line

For most AR-15 owners, a 3x flip-to-side magnifier is the sweet spot. Match it to your dot's height first, and its brand second. Buy 5x only when you know you need the extra detail and can live with the narrower view. You can see the full range in Ammunition Depot's red dot magnifier category.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3x or 5x better for an AR-15?

3x suits most people. It keeps a wider field of view and an easier eye position. 5x gives more detail at distance but narrows the view; EOTech lists 7.5 degrees for its 3x G43 and 4.4 degrees for its 5x G45.

Will any magnifier work behind any red dot?

Optically, most magnifiers work behind most 1x dots, but the optical centers must line up. Check that the magnifier's mount height matches your dot's height, such as absolute or lower 1/3 cowitness.

Do I need to re-zero my dot after adding a magnifier?

EOTech's magnifier manual advises re-checking zero after installation. The magnifier's own adjustment dials only center the reticle in the view; they do not move your zero.

What does a flip-to-side mount do?

It lets you swing the magnifier out of the way so you can use the dot at 1x, then swing it back when you need magnification, without removing it from the rifle.
