Nothing in the optics world generates more silent buyer's remorse than footprints. You find the perfect red dot, click buy, and discover it doesn't fit your slide, your plate is for a different pattern, or the "compatible" adapter puts the optic a quarter-inch too high. The footprint system isn't complicated — but nobody explains it before it costs you a return shipment. Consider this the explanation.

What a Footprint Actually Is

A footprint is the mechanical interface on the underside of an optic: the arrangement of screw holes, the recoil lugs or bosses that take the shear load, and the flat contact surfaces that seat against the mount. Screws hold the optic down; lugs keep it from shearing backward and forward under recoil. Both parts of the interface must match, which is why "the screw holes line up" is not the same as "it fits" — an optic sitting on mismatched lugs will loosen, shift, or crack its housing no matter how hard you torque it.

Unlike rifle scope rings, which standardized around a few tube diameters a century ago, pistol optics grew up brand by brand — each early maker cut its own pattern, and the industry has spent the years since sorting the survivors into de facto standards.

The Patterns That Matter in 2026

RMR pattern — the full-size standard

Trijicon's RMR footprint became the industry's lingua franca for full-size pistol optics. So many manufacturers build to it that "RMR-cut" is effectively a universal slide specification: an RMR-pattern slide accepts the RMR itself plus a long roster of compatible optics from other brands. If you're milling a full-size slide and want maximum long-term flexibility, this is the safest single answer in the segment.

RMSc class — the slim-slide standard

Micro-compact carry guns can't host a full-size footprint, and the RMSc pattern became the slim-slide equivalent of the RMR's role: the default cut on optics-ready micro-compacts and the target pattern for the entire compact-optic class. Note the "class" caveat — some optics in this size use closely related patterns with subtle differences, so verify the specific optic against your specific slide rather than trusting the size class alone.

ACRO pattern — the enclosed duty standard

Aimpoint's ACRO introduced a clamp-style interface designed for its enclosed housing, and as the duty market moved enclosed (see our enclosed-emitter guide), the ACRO pattern moved with it — other enclosed pistol optics adopted the pattern, and duty-oriented slides and plates increasingly support it. DPP pattern — the competition holdover

The Leupold DeltaPoint Pro's footprint carved out its own compatibility circle, particularly in competition and among optics with larger windows. Still widely supported by plate makers, still a live standard — just a smaller circle than RMR's.

T1/T2 pattern — the rifle micro-dot standard

On rifles, the footprint war ended long ago: Aimpoint's Micro T-1/T-2 interface is the overwhelming standard for micro rifle dots. Virtually every micro dot from every brand uses it, which means the entire universe of risers, QD mounts, and offset mounts works across brands. Plates vs Direct Milling

Factory optics-ready pistols usually ship with a universal-ish cut plus a set of adapter plates, letting one slide support several footprints. It works, with caveats:

Practical Buying Rules

  1. Buy the ecosystem, not the optic. Your footprint choice outlives any single optic. RMR-pattern for full-size flexibility, RMSc-class for slim guns, ACRO-pattern for enclosed duty use, T1/T2 for rifle micros — pick the circle you want to shop within for the next decade.
  2. Verify by pattern name, not photos. Similar-looking footprints differ in lug placement. Confirm the optic's stated pattern against your slide or plate's stated pattern, in writing, before ordering.
  3. Torque to spec with thread locker. Optic screws have published torque values for a reason. An inch-pound driver and a drop of medium-strength thread locker prevent the vast majority of optics-came-loose stories. Never degrease-and-guess.
  4. Witness-mark and recheck. Paint-pen a line across screw heads and housing after installation; a broken line at your next range trip tells you something moved before your zero does.

Fix the weakest link first

Whatever your footprint, the mounting hardware is where reliability is won: quality steel plates, correct screws, an inch-pound torque driver, and thread locker cost less combined than one return shipment on a "loose" optic that was never the optic's fault.

Rifle mounts: buy once at the right height

For T1/T2-pattern dots, the mount ecosystem offers every height and QD option imaginable. Decide your cowitness preference first, then buy a quality mount at that height — it will outlast several optics.

Footprints reward a few minutes of homework with years of interchangeability — and punish impulse buys with drawer-of-shame adapters. Pick your pattern deliberately, mount it correctly, and the whole system disappears into the background where good infrastructure belongs.
