Streamlight ProTac HL Review: A Handheld for the Nightstand

A weapon light shows you what the muzzle is pointing at. A handheld lets you look without pointing anything. That difference is the case for a good flashlight on the nightstand.

Short answer

The ProTac HL is a two-CR123A handheld rated at up to 750 lumens, 18,300 candela and a 270 meter beam distance, with ten-tap programming of its modes and an IPX7 rating. It runs on CR123A only, so if you want rechargeable cells you need a different model.

A different job from a weapon light

When people build a home-defense setup they usually think about the light on the gun first. A weapon-mounted light is the right tool when the firearm is already raised and you intend to shoot what you are looking at. It is the wrong tool for the rest of what you do with a light in the dark. You use light to search, to check a noise, to identify a person at the door, to find a child's room, to look under a bed. Every one of those jobs involves pointing a light, and a weapon light points a firearm with it.

That is the practical reason to own a good handheld light as well. It lets you look without pointing a firearm at everything you illuminate. HomeDefenseGuns makes the case for the weapon light itself in Weapon-Mounted Lights for Home Defense, and a handheld is the complement, not a competitor. This review looks at one common option, the Streamlight ProTac HL, from its published specifications. We have not tested it, so what follows is documentation, not impressions.

What Streamlight publishes

The ProTac HL page lists:

Item High Low
Lumens 750 35
Candela 18,300 900
Beam distance 270 m 60 m
Runtime 1.25 hours 18 hours

Strobe runs 2.5 hours. The light is powered by two 3V CR123A lithium batteries, which are included. It weighs 5.6 ounces with the batteries and measures 5.40 inches long. The body is anodized machined aircraft aluminum with an O-ring sealed glass lens and an anti-roll head. The light is rated IPX7 (waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes) and impact tested to 1 meter. Streamlight also lists regulated output. It ships with a removable pocket clip and a nylon holster, and carries Streamlight's limited lifetime warranty.

The listing at Ammunition Depot says 'up to 750 lumens' and describes the same ten-tap programming, two CR123A batteries and an included holster.

Ten-tap programming

Instead of a mode ring or a menu, the ProTac HL uses a tail switch you can program with ten taps. Streamlight lists three programs: high, strobe, low; high only; or low then high. The default behavior is a choice you make once and then live with.

Our suggestion is to think about what the light is for:

Whatever you pick, read Streamlight's instructions for the tap sequence before you rely on it, and re-check the program after a battery change.

Candela, in context

At 18,300 candela on high the ProTac HL throws a tighter, brighter beam than a compact pistol light but far less than the long-throw weapon lights. For comparison, the TLR-1 HP is listed at 65,000 candela and the TLR-8 X G at 5,000 candela. Our TLR-1 HP versus TLR-8A comparison explains how candela and lumens differ. In a house, most of what you need is the spill of a bright light to identify what is in front of you, and 750 lumens is ample for that. Outdoors, 270 meters of listed beam distance is an upper bound in ideal conditions.

Batteries: CR123A only, so plan accordingly

The ProTac HL is documented as a two-CR123A light. The Streamlight page does not list a rechargeable or alternate cell, so this is not a dual-fuel design. If rechargeable power is a priority, look at other models in Streamlight's range, and check what cells they use before you buy.

CR123A lithium cells have a long shelf life, but they are not something to leave in a light for years untouched. Put replacement dates on your calendar. Keep a spare pair with the light, not in a different room. Our range-bag audit offers a checklist you can adapt for batteries across lights and optics, and the winter prep guide covers cold-weather range prep more broadly.

Where a handheld fits with a weapon light

A handheld does not replace a weapon light. It does a different job:

Light in the dark also affects your vision, and low light does not make eye protection optional; HomeDefenseGuns has a short piece on low-light eye protection.

Final practical points

Whichever light you choose, store it where you can reach it without opening a drawer in the dark, and make sure everyone in the household who may use it understands the switch. And store firearms securely: a light on the nightstand should never be the only thing in the room that is easy to reach.
