Best LPVO Mounts: Cantilever, QD and One-Piece Picks

An LPVO is only as good as the metal holding it. Get the height, the offset and the tube size right, and a mid-priced scope behaves like a better one.

Short answer

For most AR-15 LPVOs, buy a one-piece cantilever mount in your scope's exact tube size (30mm or 34mm) at a height around 1.5 inches. Geissele's Super Precision is a premium fixed pick, Warne's QD X-SKEL is a strong quick-detach choice in both 30mm and 34mm, and Sightmark's LQD cantilever is a value-oriented QD option. Torque everything to the mount maker's published values.

The part nobody photographs

Rifle photos show off the scope. The mount sits underneath, out of focus, doing the hardest job on the gun: holding a heavy piece of glass in exactly the same place through recoil, bumps, heat and cold. When a scope "won't hold zero," the mount or its screws are a common suspect.

An LPVO is a demanding passenger. It is longer and heavier than a red dot, its eye relief is less forgiving, and on an AR-15 it has to sit well forward of where the rail clamps land. That is why the standard answer is a one-piece cantilever mount: a single block of metal with both rings built in, extending the scope forward of the base.

This list covers mounts our retail partners carry. We have not tested them. Where a spec is quoted, it comes from the retailer listing of the maker's specs. For anything else, check the maker's spec sheet.

Four things to get right first

1. Tube size

Rings must match your scope's tube exactly. Many 1-6x LPVOs use a 30mm tube; Vortex's Strike Eagle 1-6x24 and Primary Arms' SLx 1-6x24 Gen IV are both 30mm. Many 1-8x and 1-10x LPVOs move up to 34mm; Sig lists its Tango-MSR 1-10x models with 34mm tubes. Check your scope's spec sheet before you order.

2. Height

Mount height is usually given as the distance from the top of the rail to the center of the scope tube. Around 1.5 inches is common on AR-15 LPVO mounts because it suits a typical AR stock and cheek position. Warne lists 1.44 inches for its QD X-SKEL. Sightmark lists 1.50 inches for its SM34020. If your stock has a very low comb or you use a raised cheek riser, adjust accordingly.

3. Forward offset

The cantilever's job is to move the scope forward. Too little offset and the scope ends up too close to your face. Too much and you crane your neck. Sightmark lists a two-inch forward offset on the SM34020. Burris says its AR-P.E.P.R adds as much as 2 inches of forward scope positioning. Most AR users land in that range.

4. Fixed or quick-detach

A fixed mount clamps to the rail with screws or nuts. It is simple and solid, and you take it off with a tool. A QD mount uses levers so you can remove and reinstall the scope by hand. QD is useful if you move optics between rifles or swap to a thermal or a red dot. Good QD designs are built to return to zero, but you should always confirm zero after reinstalling.

EOTECH's Vudu LPVO manual gives a simple rule worth repeating for any scope: use the lowest rings that clear the rifle, and on AR-style rifles expect to need a cantilever mount with extra-high rings.

The picks

Geissele Super Precision AR15 (30mm): premium fixed

Geissele's Super Precision mounts are a common choice for serious AR LPVO builds. Ammunition Depot's listing describes the 30mm standard version as machined from one piece of 7075-T6 aluminum, listed at 7.2 oz, with a mounting surface spanning seven Picatinny slots and using four shear lugs, clamped with nut-and-bolt pairs. It is designed for mil-spec AR-15 and AR-10 uppers. It is a fixed mount, so it suits a rifle that keeps one optic.

Warne QD X-SKEL (30mm and 34mm): QD with a lighter frame

Warne's QD X-SKEL is a skeletonized, one-piece cantilever mount with dual quick-detach levers. Ammunition Depot's listings describe a 1.44 inch mount height, 6061-T6 aluminum construction, and steel threaded inserts at threaded interfaces. Warne advertises reliable return to zero. It is made in both tube sizes, which makes it a good default if you own LPVOs in both 30mm and 34mm.

For a 34mm scope, Ammunition Depot lists the Warne QD X-SKEL 34mm, and a fixed Warne X-SKEL Gen 2 in 34mm if you do not need QD.

Sightmark SM34020 (30mm): value-oriented QD

Sightmark's SM34020 is a one-piece cantilever with a locking quick-detach (LQD) lever. Ammunition Depot's listing gives a 1.50 inch mount height, a two-inch forward offset, 6061-T6 aluminum, and a 6.89 inch length. The model name includes 20 MOA, which typically means a built-in forward cant to add elevation travel for long-range use. On a short-range LPVO that is rarely needed, but it does no harm if your scope has enough adjustment to zero.

Burris AR-P.E.P.R: steel fixed cantilever

Burris's AR-P.E.P.R is a cantilever mount made of steel, with 30mm rings in the version Ammunition Depot lists. Burris says it moves the scope forward by up to 2 inches to help eye placement on AR rifles. Steel adds weight compared with aluminum, which some owners prefer for durability. Ammunition Depot lists the Burris AR-P.E.P.R 410341. Check Burris's spec sheet for height and weight.

Sig Sauer Alpha mounts: bought with the scope

Sig sells several Tango-MSR LPVOs bundled with its Alpha cantilever mounts. If you are buying a scope anyway, a bundle like the Tango-MSR 1-6x24 with Alpha cantilever removes the guesswork on tube size. Many owners later upgrade the mount, but a matched bundle is a sensible starting point.

Installation without regrets

  1. Mount on the upper receiver rail, not across the joint with the handguard. A one-piece mount should clamp to a single continuous rail surface.
  2. Set eye relief before tightening the rings. Put the scope at its highest power, get into your normal shooting position, and slide the scope until you see a full, clear picture. Many scopes have a tighter eyebox at high power.
  3. Level the reticle to the rifle, not to the floor. The site's mounting and zeroing guide walks through it.
  4. Torque to the maker's published values. Rail clamps and ring screws often have different values, and they differ between brands. Do not guess, and do not copy a number from a different mount. The site's mounting torque guide explains why.
  5. Witness-mark the screws with a paint pen so you can see at a glance if anything has moved.
  6. Confirm zero after any QD removal and reinstallation, and after travel.
Unload the rifle, remove the magazine and lock the bolt open before mounting anything. Confirm the chamber is empty, and keep ammunition out of the workspace. When you are done, store the rifle secured from children and unauthorized users.

Which one should you buy?

Whichever you pick, the mount matters as much as the scope. Buy the right tube size, choose a height that suits your face, and follow the torque spec on the box.

Frequently asked questions

What height mount do I need for an LPVO on an AR-15?

Most AR-15 LPVO mounts sit around 1.5 inches to the center of the tube, which suits a typical AR cheek weld. Warne lists 1.44 inches for its QD X-SKEL and Sightmark lists 1.50 inches for its SM34020. Your face and stock decide the final answer.

Why does an LPVO need a cantilever mount?

The cantilever moves the scope forward of the mount's rail clamps. On a flat-top AR that lets you set correct eye relief from a normal head position without the scope sitting too far back.

Do QD mounts hold zero?

Good QD mounts are designed to return close to zero when removed and reinstalled, and makers like Warne and Sightmark advertise that. Always confirm zero after reinstalling before relying on the rifle.

Can I put a 34mm scope in a 30mm mount?

No. The rings must match the tube diameter exactly. Check your scope's spec sheet: many 1-6x LPVOs use 30mm tubes and many 1-8x and 1-10x LPVOs use 34mm.
